Fried wontons  are my favorite snacks, I could just fill in the wonton wrappers with anything I like. This is typical appetizer or small bite dish and perfect to serve if you have a party. This time I made mozzarella basil fried wontons, yup, veggie….! served with warm tomato sauce ( I used canned tomato sauce :-), of course you can make your own favorite sauce or dip). Mozzarella Basil Fried Wontons


  • 1 package of mini mozzarella, whole or halved
  • fresh basil leaves
  • sheets of wonton wrappers
  • 1 egg,beaten (for egg wash)
  • 1 cup olive oil for frying
  • 1 cup of homemade or canned tomato sauce, warmed


  1. Whisk the egg with a fork.
  2. Drain the mozzarella on a paper towel.
  3. Wash and dry the basil leaves.
  4. On top of one a wontons, add the basil and mini mozzarella on top.
  5. Brush the outside of the wonton with the egg wash.
  6. Press ends together and fold the ends underneath.
  7. Heat the olive oil in a pan.
  8. Place the little parcels in the pan and cook till golden brown on each side, about a minute.
  9. Drain on paper towels.
  10. Serve immediately with warm tomato sauce.
