Tempe or Tempeh is traditional soy product made from soybeans, it’s rich of vitamin and protein though its fermentation process. There are many ways to prepare tempe, this time I’ll post Tempe Mendoan (fried tempeh), traditional dish from Banyumas territory in Indonesia. It is made from thin tempeh, fried with flour-dough, the result that it cooked on the outside but partially cooked on the inside. Serve the tempe mendoan with chili soy sauce dip “sambal kecap manis”

Sambal Kecap Manis Recipe.

Tempe Mendoan


  • 1package Tempeh (300g)
  • ---------------------------------------
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 tablespoon coriander seeds
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • ----------------------------------------
  • 100ml water
  • ---------------------------------------
  • 1 egg
  • 2 stalks green onion/scallion, sliced
  • 200grams all purpose flour
  • 150ml water
  • ----------------------------------------
  • 200ml cooking oil for frying


  1. Slice the tempe as thin as possible.
  2. Grind coriander seeds, salt and garlic, place it in a big bowl, add 100ml water. Combine well. Marinade the sliced tempeh with the liquid mixture.
  3. Remove marinated tempe in a plate.
  4. Combine the rest of the marinate liquid withe egg, sliced scallions, flour and water.
  5. Dip each piece of tempeh into the liquid dough.
  6. Heat oil in a frying pan, fry the tempe 1-2 minutes each side, wait until it becomes hardened. Please don't wait until it becomes yellow and crispy. Take out the tempeh from the warm oil.
  7. Serve with soy sauce chili dip.
  8. Mix well: the two kinds of flour, all ground ingredients, water, and green onion, mix well into a liquid dough.
