Spicy Tofu Soy Sauce

I’ve made this spicy tofu soy sauce for dinner yesterday. Tofu is one of my favorite soy product, I think I’ve posted a lot of tofu recipes on this blog, such as; Miso Soup, Fried Tofu with Chili Tomato Sweet Soy Sauce Dip, Baked Sesame Seeds Tofu Sticks and Tofu Coconut Milk Curry Soy Sauce. If you’re one of Tofu-fan, don’t be hesitate to try one of the recipe :-).

Note: On this recipe I used Indonesian sweet thick soy sauce (kecap manis), If you don’t have at home, you can also use normal soy sauce. Leave out the red chilis if you don’t like spicy food :-)be

Spicy Tofu Soy Sauce


  • 500g tofu, cut into rectangular
  • 1 red bell pepper, remove the seeds, sliced
  • 2 shallots, sliced
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 3 tablespoons sweet thick soy sauce
  • 100ml water or vegetable broth
  • 1cm ginger, peeled, crushed
  • 1 cm galangal, peeled, crushed
  • 2 red chilies, sliced
  • 1 tablespoon palm sugar
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 200ml vegetable oil for frying
  • chopped scallion for garnish


  1. Season rectangular tofu with salt and pepper both sides.
  2. Heat oil in a pan. Fry the tofu until crispy. Strain with sieve. Set aside.
  3. Sauté shallot, onion and garlic and sliced bell pepper until softened
  4. Add sweet soy sauce and water, add galangal, ginger and chili. Cook for few minutes.
  5. Add fried tofu. Combine well, remove from heat. Ready to serve.
  6. Garnish with scallion.
  7. Serve with warm rice.
