Sambal Tomat

Sambal Tomat or Tomato chili sauce is a condiment to many Indonesian foods, it’s all time favorite chili sauce. For people who love spicy food, you’ll love this. Yesterday I posted Indonesian eggplant chili sauce recipe, I used this sauce to combine it with the fried eggplants.  This sauce also perfect to combine it with hard boiled eggs, this is also Indonesian favorite food.

This Sambal tomat recipe adapted from Dina Yuen at on her book Indonesian Cooking.

Sambal Tomat


  • 5 red bird's eye chili peppers, rinsed, ends trimmed
  • 2 shallots
  • 6 cloves garlic
  • 1 tomato, rinsed, chopped into chunks
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 tablespoon oil for sautéing


  1. Grind the chilies, shallots, garlic by using food processor or a mortar and pestle until smooth.
  2. Heat oil in a small pan, sauté the paste for about 1 minute until fragrant. Add the tomatoes, salt and sugar. Sauté until tomato has broken down.
  3. Serve in a small bowl.
