Oseng Kerang or Indonesian sautéed Mussels

I was looking for recipe for mussels on instagram and found this recipe oseng kerang or sautéed mussels there. I’ve tried it and since then become my favorite recipe of mussels.

Oseng Kerang or Indonesian sautéed Mussels


  • 350gr of skinless green shell mussels
  • 4 large pieces of green chili or red chili, sliced
  • 5 shallots, sliced
  • 3 garlic, sliced
  • 1 stalk lemongrass, crushed
  • 2cm galangal, crushed
  • 2cm ginger, crushed
  • 3 pieces of kaffir lime leaves
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 4 red chili peppers
  • 3 tablespoons fish sauce
  • 4 tablespoons sweet soy sauce
  • oil
  • salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste
  • Sugar to taste


  1. Add oil in a hot pan, sautè shallot, garlic, galangal, ginger, lemongrass, lime leaves, bay leaves and chili pepper
  2. Once fragrant put the green chilli and stir briefly then put mussels, stir until blended and then add a little water.
  3. Pour the fish sauce and sweet soy sauce and cook it back, then add a little water and season with salt, pepper and sugar until thick.
  4. Served with warm rice.
