Indonesian Rice Pudding

indonesian rice puddingBubur Sumsum is Indonesian favorite dish. It can be serve as breakfast or dessert. It’s pudding-like dish made from rice flour and coconut milk, serve with palm sugar sauce, flavor with pandan leaves. Pandan leaves is important ingredient for  this recipe, it has special flavour and smell good. In Germany you only can find it at Asian groceries store.

Indonesian Rice Pudding


  • For pudding:
  • 80g Rice flour
  • 500ml Coconut milk
  • 2 Pandan leaves, knotted
  • 1/4 teaspoon Salt
  • For sauce:
  • 100gram Palm sugar, grounded or block
  • 100ml Water
  • 2 Pandan leaves, knotted


  1. for pudding: Boil coconut milk with knotted pandan leaves with low heat in a pot. Mix rice flour and salt, add with some of hot coconut milk, pour it into the pot, stir constantly for about 10 minutes, until creamy consistence. Before serving, remove pandan leaves.
  2. for sauce: Boil palm sugar, water and pandan leaves together, until the sugar dissolved. Strain it. On this recipe I used palm sugar in block, you could also use grounded palm sugar.
  3. how to serve: Prepare a small bowl, scoop some of the pudding, pour some of the sauce on top of it, it can be serve warm or cold.
  4. This recipe is for 2 Person, you could double the portion.
