Clear Spinach Soup

Clear spinach soup or known as Sayur bening bayam is one of famous Indonesian cuisine, it’s daily menu of Indonesian family. It’s simple to be made and healthy. Basically it is boiled water with corn and carrot, at the end add the spinach and some seasoning ingredients. I’m sure the ingredients are available in everybody’s kitchen and easily to find in supermarket.

Sayur bening bayam could be served as soup or main course. Normally I ate that with  steamed white rice and bakwan jagung, it’s perfect light dinner, for people who are Vegetarian, they will love this. As my mom came to visit me in Germany, she made this for us (my husband and I), she taught me how to made this, I thought it was difficult, but no…..very easy! For step by step instructions, click here.

Clear Spinach Soup


  • 200g fresh Spinach
  • 1 Corn
  • 1 Carrot
  • 2 Shallot
  • 2cm Galangal
  • 2 Bay leaves
  • 1Liter Water
  • 1 teaspoon Sugar
  • a pinch of Salt


  1. Wash the spinach.
  2. Cut the corn kernel into 4 pieces or you could also shredded it (easy to eat).
  3. Cut diced or lengthwise the carrot.
  4. Slice the shallot.
  5. Crush the galangal.
  6. Boil water in a soup pot.
  7. Add corn, carrot, shallot, galangal and bay leaves into the pot.
  8. Cover the pan, continue boiling for 10 - 15 minutes.
  9. Open the cover, add spinach, cook for a while
  10. Ready to eat just like that or serve with warm white rice.


It is better when you cook this recipe for small portion or for one time meal, don't recook or don't eat it the next day
